iPhone 17 Review: Cheaper at the Shop Than at Apple

The Take

Apple's own store in India now asks Rs. 99,900 for an iPhone 17. On 17 October a major Indian retailer was selling the same 256GB phone for about Rs. 87,000. So the most expensive place to buy Apple's base iPhone is Apple. That is the first useful thing to know. The second is that the phone deserves the money better than the price tag suggests: a 120Hz ProMotion screen that finally reached the base model, 2 x 48MP rear cameras, an 18MP selfie camera that turns itself sideways, 256GB to start and a 177g body. It also has a 3,692mAh battery, a USB port that runs at year-2000 speed, and no charger in the box. If you are buying an iPhone this year, this is the one, and it is not at Apple's price.

01 - The price, twice

Apple raised it. The shops did not follow.

The iPhone 17 launched here on 19 September 2025 at Rs. 82,900 for 256GB, the launch price. A year later, around the September 2026 launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple India raised it to Rs. 99,900, and the 512GB model from Rs. 1,02,900 to Rs. 1,24,900. That is Rs. 17,000 more for a phone that had not changed by a single gram.

The open market did not take the hint. On 17 October the 256GB model listed at about Rs. 87,000 at one major retailer, Rs. 13,000 under Apple's own sticker. Only 1 retailer let us confirm an orderable listing that day, so treat that as a lead to check, not a promise. But the direction is not in doubt: no reason exists to pay Apple's list price for this phone in India right now, and anyone paying Rs. 99,900 is paying the highest price anyone in India is asking.

Notice what this does to the family, too. More on that in section 04, because it decides which iPhone to buy.

02 - What it does brilliantly

The base iPhone stopped being the punishment model.

For years the cheapest current iPhone was defined by what it lacked, and the first thing it lacked was a fast screen. Android phones at Rs. 15,000 scrolled at 120Hz while a Rs. 80,000 iPhone ran at 60Hz. That is over. The iPhone 17 has ProMotion, adapting up to 120Hz, and an always-on display that drops to 1Hz when the phone is idle on the desk. It sounds like a footnote and it is not: it is the one change you notice every time you touch the phone.

The screen around it is properly good. 6.3 inches of OLED at 460 pixels per inch, 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits for HDR, and an outdoor peak Apple puts at 3,000 nits, which is the figure that matters under a May sun on a Delhi road. Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which Apple says resists scratches 3 times better than the last generation.

The cameras are 2 good cameras, not 1 good camera and a passenger. A 48MP main sensor at f/1.6 with sensor-shift stabilisation, and a 48MP ultra-wide next to it, where most phones at any price pair the main camera with something far weaker. The main sensor crops to a 2x view that Apple calls optical quality. Video goes to 4K at 60fps in Dolby Vision from both sides.

The selfie camera is the small delight. It is an 18MP square sensor with Center Stage, which means you can hold the phone upright and still take a landscape group photo, because the sensor, not your wrist, decides the orientation. Anyone who has tried to fit 6 cousins into a vertical selfie at a wedding understands the point immediately.

And it is small. 177g and 7.95mm thick, with IP68 down to 6 metres for 30 minutes. In 2026, when the Android phones at this price weigh 210g and up to carry 7,000mAh, a phone this light is a genuine choice rather than a compromise.

03 - What it gives up

A small battery, a slow port, and no promise in writing.

The battery is the obvious one. 3,692mAh. Apple says up to 30 hours of video playback, and Apple's chips are efficient, so that figure is not a fantasy. But at about Rs. 85,000 the OnePlus 15 carries 7,300mAh and charges at 120W. The iPhone 17 reaches 50% in 20 minutes only if you buy a 40W adapter separately, because none comes with it; the box holds the phone, a cable and some paper. Wireless charging is 25W on MagSafe or Qi2.

The port is a museum piece. USB-C, but at USB 2 speed, 480 megabits a second. If you shoot long 4K videos and move them to a laptop by cable, you will feel it. If you never plug the phone into anything except a charger, you never will.

No telephoto. The 2x is a crop of the main sensor, a good one, but beyond that you are on digital zoom. Rivals at this money carry dedicated zoom lenses. If you photograph your child's school stage show from row 15, that is the row on this sheet that matters.

No fixed update promise. Apple does not publish a number of years. It has a long record of supporting iPhones for many years, and the iPhone 17 shipped on iOS 26 and already runs iOS 27. But a record is not a written commitment, and Samsung and Google now publish 7 years for their flagships. We note it; most iPhone buyers will not worry about it.

04 - Against the family

The cheaper iPhone is the one to skip.

The iPhone 17e launched on 11 March 2026 at Rs. 64,900, the launch price, as the budget way into the same A19 chip. Apple has since raised it to Rs. 79,900. We could not confirm an orderable 256GB listing for it at a major retailer on 17 October, so take Apple's figure as the ceiling. Even at that ceiling, the 17e sits only about Rs. 7,000 below what the iPhone 17 was selling for the same day.

Look at what the gap buys. The 17e has a 6.1-inch screen at 60Hz with no ProMotion and no always-on display, no Dynamic Island, no Camera Control, a single 48MP rear camera with no ultra-wide, a 12MP front camera, a 4-core GPU against 5, and Apple quotes 26 hours of video against 30. At Rs. 64,900 it was a reasonable trade. Squeezed this close to the iPhone 17, it is the phone in the family that makes the least sense, and the iPhone 17 is the obvious stretch.

Going the other way, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs. 1,64,900 (the launch price). Our iPhone 18 Pro review found most of that extra money going on a new camera aperture and a chip, which is a fine purchase and a very different budget.

05 - Against the market

Why buy this instead of an Android at the same money.

At about Rs. 85,000 to Rs. 90,000, the Android shelf is strong. The OnePlus 15, at about Rs. 85,000 on 17 October, brings that 7,300mAh battery, 120W charging and a top Snapdragon chip. The Pixel 11, reviewed in our Google Pixel 11 review, brings a 5x telephoto and 7 years of promised updates. The Galaxy S26, at about Rs. 88,000 on the same day and covered in our Galaxy S26 review, brings Samsung's own 7-year promise in a compact body.

On paper, each of those beats the iPhone 17 on at least 1 headline row. The case for the iPhone is not a row. It is the whole: a light phone with a fast screen, 2 matched 48MP cameras, a very good front camera, and the ecosystem you may already live in. If those are your reasons, the 17 delivers them without asking for Pro money.

Buy it if
  • You want an iPhone and do not need a telephoto lens
  • A light, compact phone with a 120Hz screen matters to you
  • Selfies and group photos are a big part of your camera use
  • You are already on a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch
  • Battery size and charging speed top your list
  • You zoom a lot: rivals at this price carry telephoto lenses
  • You want a written number of update years
  • The only price on offer is Apple's Rs. 99,900
The Verdict

Buy, for iPhone buyers, and not at Apple's price. The iPhone 17 is the first base iPhone in years that does not feel like the cut-down one: a ProMotion screen, 2 strong 48MP cameras, a clever 18MP selfie camera and 256GB to start, in a 177g body. Its compromises are real, a small battery, a slow port and no charger, and an Android at the same money will out-spec it on any one of them. But Apple's own list-price rise to Rs. 99,900 has done the iPhone 17e more damage than this phone, and with listings near Rs. 87,000 it is the iPhone that makes the most sense in India today.

The best-value iPhone is the plain one. Just not from Apple.

How we priced and checked this

Prices are for the base 256GB model, read from live listings at major Indian retailers on 17 October 2026; only 1 retailer could confirm an orderable listing for the iPhone 17 that day. Apple's list prices were read from its India store the same day, and launch prices are labelled as such. Specifications are confirmed against Apple's own India specification pages and at least 1 independent source; the 3,692mAh battery figure comes from regulatory filings, since Apple publishes hours rather than capacity. Our verdict is based on published specification, not hands-on testing: we have not held this phone.
