The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G is the quiet right answer at this price, and it comes with a twist: it is the same phone as the Galaxy A17 5G and the Galaxy F17 5G. Samsung's own India spec tables for the 3 match on every hardware row. What you get is a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED, a stabilised 50MP main camera with an ultra-wide beside it, Gorilla Glass Victus, a 7.5mm body, and a promise of 6 Android upgrades and 6 years of security updates. Live listings for the 4GB + 128GB model sit between Rs. 17,500 and Rs. 19,000, up from Rs. 12,499 at launch, a rise of 40% to 50%; its twins moved too. The compromises are a 5,000mAh battery, 25W charging with no charger in the box, and a 90Hz screen. Buy it, under whichever badge is cheapest on the day, if you keep phones for years.

The phone for the person who does not upgrade.
Every Indian family has one. The uncle whose phone is older than some of the cousins. The parent who will not hear of a new one while the old one still rings. Phones bought for these people are not bought for the spec sheet. They are bought to work, quietly, for a very long time.
The Galaxy M17 5G is built for exactly that buyer, and for once the spec sheet backs it up. Samsung promises 6 Android upgrades and security updates until 30 September 2031. The phone launched on Android 15, so on paper it should reach Android 21. Samsung is one of very few makers promising 6 Android upgrades at this price, and it makes the same promise on the cheaper M17e.
M17, F17, A17. Pick the cheapest.
Samsung sells this hardware 3 times over. The Galaxy A17 5G arrived first, in August 2025, then the F17 5G in September and the M17 5G in October. Samsung's India spec tables for all 3 agree on the display, chip, cameras, apertures, stabilisation, battery, dimensions, weight and radios. What differs is the colour, the shop, the memory options and the price.
- Galaxy M17 5G: Sapphire Black or Moonlight Silver. The 4GB model lists at Rs. 17,500 to Rs. 19,000.
- Galaxy F17 5G: Violet Pop or Neo Black. The 4GB model lists at Rs. 17,500 to Rs. 20,500.
- Galaxy A17 5G: starts at 6GB, and lists at Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 23,500. It launched at Rs. 18,999, and Samsung's own store now asks Rs. 27,999.
So the M17 and F17 are the way in, and the A17 badge costs about Rs. 4,500 more for 2GB of extra RAM. Our earlier Galaxy A17 5G review covers the same hardware under its original name. Buy whichever of the M17 and F17 is cheaper on the day, in the colour you like.
The screen, the camera and the calendar.
A real AMOLED. A 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED with deep blacks, at about Rs. 18,000, under Gorilla Glass Victus. Of the 4 phones in our rivals table below, it is the only one with an AMOLED and the only one at Full HD+. The other 3 use 720p LCDs. For reading, streaming and photos, that difference is visible on the first day and every day after.
The most complete camera kit here. The 50MP main camera has optical stabilisation, which helps in dim rooms and steady video. There is a 5MP ultra-wide for group shots and buildings, and a 13MP selfie camera. None of the rivals below has both OIS and an ultra-wide. We have not used the phone, so we make no claim about the pictures, only about the hardware.
Thin and light. 7.5mm and 192g make it one of the easier phones to carry at this money. If you pay by tapping your phone, check the listing first: launch coverage lists NFC, but Samsung's own M17 page does not.
The calendar. 6 years of security updates, to the end of September 2031. That is the headline, and it is why this phone belongs on a long-term shortlist.
The battery is ordinary, and the box is empty.
5,000mAh at 25W. 5 years ago that was standard. In 2026, at Rs. 18,000, rivals carry 6,000mAh to 7,900mAh and charge at up to 45W. And Samsung puts no charger in the box, so budget for one if you do not already own a fast USB-C adapter.
90Hz, not 120Hz. Scrolling is smoother than a 60Hz phone and less smooth than all 3 rivals here, which reach 120Hz. The M17 trades refresh rate for resolution and contrast, and we think that is the right trade, but it is a trade.
The small omissions. No headphone jack. A single speaker. The memory card shares a slot with the second SIM. IP54 means splashes and dust, not a dunk.
The chip. The Exynos 1330 handles everyday work on its 5nm process. It is not a gaming chip.
Bigger batteries, softer screens.
POCO M8x 5G, about Rs. 18,000. The rival for the opposite buyer. 7,900mAh at 45W, 22.5W reverse charging and a newer Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. In return it has a 720p LCD, no ultra-wide, and weighs 232g. If the battery icon is what you check most, buy the POCO. If the screen is what you look at most, buy the Samsung. Our POCO M8x 5G review has the rest.
Galaxy M17e 5G, Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 18,000. The cheaper cousin, and a different phone underneath: a Dimensity 6300, a 720p LCD at 120Hz, 6,000mAh, a headphone jack, the same 6 years of updates, but no OIS, no ultra-wide and an 8MP selfie camera. The 2 overlap in price on the day, and when they do, the M17 is the better buy unless you need the jack or the bigger battery. Our Galaxy M17e 5G review weighs that trade.
Redmi 15C 5G, about Rs. 17,500. A bigger battery and a charger in the box, but a 720p screen, 2 Android upgrades against 6, and 4 years of security updates against 6.
- You keep a phone for 4 years or more, or are buying for someone who does
- You want an AMOLED screen at Full HD+ without spending Rs. 20,000
- You want OIS and an ultra-wide on a budget phone
- You prefer a thin, light phone
- Battery life is your first priority: the POCO M8x carries 7,900mAh
- You do not own a fast charger and do not want to buy one
- You use wired earphones every day: the M17e has a jack
- You want 120Hz scrolling
Buy it, under the cheapest badge. The Galaxy M17 5G is not exciting, and it does not need to be. It pairs the sharpest, deepest screen of any phone on this page with a stabilised camera, an ultra-wide and a 6-year update promise, in a body that is easy to live with. Its battery and charging are merely adequate, and the box has no charger. If that sounds like the right trade, buy the M17 or the identical F17, whichever is cheaper on the day. The Galaxy A17 5G is the same phone with 2GB more RAM, for about Rs. 4,500 more.
Not the loudest phone in the band. Built to be kept.
Shopping the band? Our best display phones between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 ranks the M17 and F17 first, and our best battery life phones between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 covers the other priority.
We have not used this phone. This review is based on Samsung India's published specifications, India launch coverage and live retail listings checked on 28 October 2026.
