Xiaomi 17T Review: A Real 5x Zoom, and Rs. 10,000 More Since June

The Take

What does Rs. 10,000 buy on the Xiaomi 17T? Nothing new. It launched in India on 4 June 2026 at Rs. 59,999 for 12GB + 256GB, Xiaomi raised the list price by Rs. 5,000 twice, the second time on 1 October, and it now costs about Rs. 70,000. Not a milliamp-hour changed. Which is a pity, because the phone is good: a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto with OIS, co-engineered with Leica, a 6,500mAh battery in an 8.17mm, 200g body, a Dimensity 8500-Ultra with UFS 4.1, IP68 and an IR blaster. At Rs. 60,000 that was an easy yes. At Rs. 70,000 it has no wireless charging and a rival Rs. 2,000 cheaper that does more. Consider it if the 5x lens is the reason you are buying. Otherwise, look one shelf over.

01 - What it does brilliantly

A real 5x lens, in a phone that is not a brick.

The telephoto is the reason this phone exists. 50MP, 5x optical at 115mm, with its own OIS, behind a lens Xiaomi says it co-engineered with Leica. That reach is the difference between a photo of the stage and a photo of the singer. Xiaomi also advertises a "10x optical-grade" mode; that is a crop from the same sensor, so we count the 5x and nothing beyond it.

The main camera is not an afterthought either. 50MP, f/1.7, with OIS, and both it and the selfie camera record 4K video, the rear at up to 60fps.

6,500mAh in 200g and 8.17mm. That is a full-day-and-then-some battery in a phone of ordinary size and weight, with 67W charging and a charger in the box. A 22.5W reverse wired mode will rescue a friend's phone or your earbuds from the same cable.

The plumbing is current. The Dimensity 8500-Ultra is a 4nm chip, paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X and UFS 4.1 storage, the faster standard. Bluetooth 6.0, NFC and an IR blaster round it out, and Xiaomi commits to 6 years of security updates.

02 - What it compromises

Rs. 10,000 later, the gaps are louder.

The price ladder is the compromise. Rs. 59,999 in June, Rs. 69,999 since 1 October, for the same 12GB + 256GB. Xiaomi did not add anything in between. A phone judged at Rs. 60,000 had nothing to answer for. At Rs. 70,000 it is judged against phones that launched at that price, and the list below is what changes.

No wireless charging, of any kind. Xiaomi's own specification lists wired charging only. The reverse charging is wired too. At Rs. 70,000 that is now the exception rather than the norm among the rivals on this page.

The ultra-wide is 12MP and the selfie camera 32MP. Both are fine. Neither matches the 50MP sensors some rivals fit on every lens.

1 IP rating, and an update promise with a gap. IP68 covers submersion; it does not add the high-pressure jet ratings that phones like the Reno15 Pro list. And while 6 years of security updates is settled, the number of Android upgrades is not: Xiaomi's India material and published launch coverage disagree, so we print only the security term.

The ladder, dated

12GB + 256GB: Rs. 59,999 at launch on 4 June 2026, Rs. 64,999 after a first rise, Rs. 69,999 from 1 October. The 512GB model moved in step, from Rs. 64,999 to Rs. 74,999. Live listings today sit at the new list price. Bank offers come and go on top of it; they are offers, not the price.

03 - Where it sits

The phone Rs. 2,000 cheaper does more of what most people use.

OPPO Reno15 Pro, about Rs. 68,000 for 12GB + 256GB, unchanged from its January launch price. It brings 50W wireless charging, IP66, IP68 and IP69, a larger 6.78-inch LTPO screen and 50MP on all 4 cameras. The 17T keeps the longer 5x lens, the newer chip and the faster storage. Our OPPO Reno15 Pro review has the rest.

Xiaomi 17, the 17T's own flagship sibling, launched at Rs. 89,999 with 50MP on all 3 Leica cameras, wireless charging and a smaller body. We could not confirm its current price at 2 major retailers today, so we print none; our Xiaomi 17 review covers what the extra money bought at launch.

Buy it if
  • You want a 5x periscope telephoto under Rs. 75,000
  • You want 6,500mAh in a 200g phone
  • Fast UFS 4.1 storage and an IR blaster matter to you
  • You charge on a pad: there is no wireless charging
  • You want IP69 or a bigger screen for less: the Reno15 Pro
  • You bought on the June price and want it back: it is gone
The Verdict

Consider, for the zoom. On published specification the Xiaomi 17T is a well-made phone with one genuinely special part: a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto with OIS, alongside a 6,500mAh battery in 200g, a 4nm Dimensity 8500-Ultra and UFS 4.1. What changed is the price, up Rs. 10,000 in 4 months for the same phone. At about Rs. 70,000 it gives up wireless charging and IP69 to a Reno15 Pro that costs about Rs. 2,000 less. If the 5x lens is the brief, buy the 17T. If it is not, buy the Reno.

The lens zoomed in. So did the price.

How we priced and checked this

The price is for the base 12GB + 256GB model, read from a live listing at a major Indian retailer on 14 October 2026 and matching Xiaomi's own list price; launch prices and the dated rises are labelled as such, each rise confirmed by dated India reports. Rival prices are live listings checked the same day. Specifications are confirmed against at least 2 independent sources each, led by Xiaomi India's own specification. Where sources disagreed, such as the number of Android upgrades, the back and frame material, the Wi-Fi generation and the telephoto aperture, we left the claim out. Our verdict is based on published specification, not hands-on testing: we have not held this phone.
