iPhone 18 Pro vs Pixel 11 Pro Fold: Match the Storage, Then Decide

The Take

The folding phone has the bigger battery, and at matched storage it is the cheaper one. India gets the Pixel 11 Pro Fold in a single 16GB with 512GB trim at Rs. 1,86,999; the equivalent 512GB iPhone 18 Pro is Rs. 1,89,900. So the second screen is not the thing you are paying extra for. What you are paying is everything else on the sheet: half the charging speed, a lower-resolution ultrawide and telephoto, and 28 grams. Buy the iPhone unless you will genuinely open the other one every day.

The folding phone has the bigger battery. That is not how this is supposed to go.

Everything you have ever read about foldables says the hinge eats the cell, and for years it did. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries 4,806mAh. The iPhone 18 Pro sold in India carries 4,056mAh. That is the whole premise of this comparison inverted in one line, and it is not a typo: India is not on Apple's eSIM-only list, so the phone we buy here keeps its nano-SIM tray, and the tray version of the 18 Pro is rated at 4,056mAh where the eSIM-only version is 4,288mAh. You are getting the smaller of Apple's 2 batteries because you are getting the SIM slot you asked for. We wrote about the same trade in the iPhone 18 Pro Max review, where it costs a little less proportionally because the Max is a bigger phone.

01 - The price, done properly

Rs. 22,000 apart, until you match the storage.

Read the headline numbers and the Pixel looks like the expensive one: Rs. 1,86,999 against Rs. 1,64,900. Rs. 22,000 for the privilege of folding.

Except those 2 numbers are not the same phone in any sense that matters. India gets exactly one Pixel 11 Pro Fold: 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, in Olive, and no other configuration exists here. Apple's Rs. 1,64,900 buys you 256GB. Step the iPhone up to 512GB, which is what you would have to do to be comparing like with like, and it is Rs. 1,89,900.

The figure almost nobody prints

At 512GB, the folding phone is about Rs. 2,900 cheaper than the slab. Both are launch prices and we are labelling them as such - these are August and September phones and there is no open-market band to quote yet on either. But the comparison you actually face in a shop is Rs. 1,86,999 against Rs. 1,89,900, and at that point "is the hinge worth the money" stops being the question.

So what follows is not an argument about whether a second screen justifies a premium. There is no premium. It is an argument about what Google gave up to fit that screen into a pocket, because it gave up a good deal.

02 - Where the Pixel is genuinely brilliant

Five millimetres, 239 grams, and an IP68 rating with a hinge in it.

Give this phone its due before taking it apart, because the engineering here is the real thing. Unfolded, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is 5mm thick. It weighs 239g, which is about 20 grams less than the outgoing model, and only 28g more than an iPhone with a screen barely more than half the area. Google has also certified the whole assembly to IP68: dust as well as water, on a device with a moving joint down the middle. Anyone who has watched a hinge fill with Delhi construction dust knows what that sentence costs to earn.

Then the screens. 8 inches at 2076 x 2152 is a near-square working surface, not a phone screen with extra millimetres. Both panels run to 3,600 nits peak, against Apple's 3,000. Read that as a display that will stay legible on a Chennai afternoon, not as a number it holds while you scroll.

And the support commitment, which is the quiet one. Google publishes 7 years of OS updates, security patches and Pixel Drops. Apple publishes nothing at all. Apple's record in practice is long and everybody knows it, but a record is not a commitment, and on our own index the Pixel's software line sits better than 93% of the 187 phones on sale in India where the specification says anything at all. The iPhone is not rated on that line, because Apple has not stated a figure.

03 - What the hinge cost

Two cameras that are not really cameras, and charging from 2023.

Now the bill. The Pixel's rear set reads 48MP + 10.5MP + 10.8MP. Apple's reads 48MP + 48MP + 48MP. Those middle and right numbers are where a folding chassis makes itself felt: there is no depth for a full-size ultrawide or a full-size telephoto behind a 5mm panel, so Google fits small ones.

This is not a filler-lens situation - a 10.8MP 5x periscope is a real lens doing real work, and it out-reaches Apple's 4x. But resolution is what you crop into, and a 48MP 4x will survive a crop that a 10.8MP 5x will not. On the ultrawide the gap is not close at all: 48MP against 10.5MP is the difference between a lens you would shoot a group photo on and one you use because it is there.

Charging is the other line where the fold shows. 50% in about 15 minutes on the iPhone, with a 60W adapter. 30W on the Pixel, 50% in about 30 minutes. The Pixel starts from a bigger cell, so it is not as lopsided as it looks in daily use, but the practical shape of the 2 phones is different: the iPhone is the one you can rescue in the time it takes to finish a coffee.

Read the inner screen's hardness rating honestly

The cover glass is a glass-ceramic. The inner panel is a plastic-class surface with a Mohs level 5 hardcoat, which is hard enough to shrug off a fingernail or a coin, and is still not Ceramic Shield 2. Google says this generation is 3 times stronger than the last. Both things can be true, and a folding inner display remains the most fragile large surface you can carry.

04 - The bit our own scoring cannot see

There is no column for "it opens".

Scored on published specification against the 287 phones we have verified on sale in India, the Fold lands in the lower third of the market and the iPhone lands in the middle. Both of those readings are accurate and both are close to useless here, for a reason worth stating out loud: a spec index measures battery against battery and camera against camera, and it has nowhere to put an eight-inch screen that fits in a kurta pocket.

That is not a flaw in the scoring so much as the honest limit of it. If you want a tablet you do not have to carry separately, no amount of 48MP ultrawide on the other phone replaces it, and no percentile we publish will tell you whether you will actually use it. Only you know whether you read, sketch, split-screen and watch on a phone, or whether you mostly reply to messages and take pictures of your children. We have since written the folding phone up on its own, in our Pixel 11 Pro Fold review.

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if
  • You want the most consistent camera set at this money, especially the ultrawide
  • You charge in short bursts during the day
  • You want one screen that is sharp, tough and 28g lighter
  • 256GB is genuinely enough, in which case you also save Rs. 22,000
  • You will open it every day, not twice a month to show people
  • You want the seven-year support commitment in writing
  • You want 512GB and 16GB, and want to pay less for it
  • You reach past 4x often enough for the 5x lens to matter
The Verdict

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro, and buy the 256GB one. It is the better camera system by a clear margin, it charges twice as fast, it is lighter, its screen is harder, and at Rs. 1,64,900 it is the cheapest way into this class of phone by a distance. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold wins on the 2 specs a spreadsheet can see - a bigger battery and a published seven-year support commitment - and on one it cannot, which is that it turns into an eight-inch tablet and does it at 239g and 5mm without giving up an IP68 rating. That is a remarkable object. It is also, at 512GB, about Rs. 2,900 cheaper than the equivalent iPhone, which is the strongest argument in its favour and the one nobody is making. So the honest split is this: if the fold is a novelty to you, it will stay a novelty and you should buy the Apple. If you already know you want 2 screens, you are not paying a premium for them, and you should stop apologising for it. Judged on published specification rather than a hands-on test.

Winner: Apple iPhone 18 Pro, for most people. Read our iPhone 18 Pro Max review, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold launch details, or the cheaper Google option in our Pixel 11 review.
