Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G Review: The Biggest Battery in the Room

The Take

Every complaint we had about the Redmi Note 17 Pro, Xiaomi answered in the Note 17 Pro Max. 1080p video becomes 4K from the rear and the front. The older chip becomes a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 with LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 storage. And the battery becomes the headline: 10,000mAh, filled at 100W, behind IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K. That is a genuinely impressive phone. It costs about Rs. 50,000 for 8GB + 256GB, and at that money it walks into the OnePlus Nord 6, which is faster, lighter and about Rs. 3,500 cheaper. Buy it only if the battery is the whole brief.

A variant note: India gets the 10,000mAh battery. The European version of this phone carries a smaller cell and different storage options, so a spec sheet written for that unit will print the wrong numbers for the one sold here.

01 - The applause

10,000mAh, 100W, and nothing given up to get there.

Big batteries usually come with a bill. The phone gets thick, the charging stays slow because the cell takes forever to fill, or the maker quietly cuts the camera to pay for it. The Note 17 Pro Max refuses all 3 trades. A 10,000mAh cell sits in a body 8.65mm thin, it charges at 100W with the brick in the box, and it can push 27W back out by cable to top up a friend's phone or a pair of earbuds. That is a real engineering result, and it deserves to be said without a "but" attached.

The rest of the sheet backs it up. The main camera has OIS behind a bright f/1.5 lens, and both the rear and the 32MP front camera record 4K, which was the single biggest gap in the cheaper Note 17 Pro. The 1.5K AMOLED sits under Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K set covers dust, submersion and high-pressure hot water jets. Xiaomi promises 4 Android upgrades and 6 years of security updates, which takes a phone bought today to 2032. And the small things are kept: an IR blaster for the TV and the AC, stereo speakers, Bluetooth 6.0.

Xiaomi quotes a 3,500-nit peak for the screen. Treat that as a highlight figure, measured on a small part of the panel, not as how bright the whole screen gets in the sun.

02 - Pro or Pro Max

Rs. 10,000 more than the Pro, and this time it shows.

Our Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G review told readers to skip that phone. At matched 8GB + 256GB, the Pro Max costs about Rs. 10,000 more, and what it adds is not cosmetic:

Spec Note 17 Pro 5G Note 17 Pro Max 5G
Chipset Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 Snapdragon 6 Gen 5
Memory / storage LPDDR4X / UFS 2.2 or 3.1 LPDDR5X / UFS 4.1
Battery / charging 9,000mAh / 67W 10,000mAh / 100W
Rear video 1080p at 30fps 4K at 30fps
Front camera 16MP, 1080p 32MP, 4K
Same on both 1.5K 120Hz AMOLED, IP66/68/69/69K, 50MP OIS main + 8MP ultrawide, IR blaster, Wi-Fi 5, 4 OS + 6 years of updates

So inside the family, the verdict flips. If you are shopping Xiaomi at Rs. 40,000 for 256GB, stretch to the Pro Max. The problem is that the shop does not stop at Xiaomi.

03 - The reckoning

Rs. 50,000 is a room with a Nord 6 in it.

OnePlus Nord 6, about Rs. 46,500 for 8GB + 256GB: this is the comparison that decides it. For about Rs. 3,500 less at the same memory, it brings a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, a flagship-class chip a tier above the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, a 165Hz AMOLED, 4K at 60fps from the main camera, Wi-Fi 7, the same 4 + 6 year update promise and the same 4 ingress ratings, in a lighter 217g body. What it gives up is exactly the Pro Max's headline: 9,000mAh at 80W against 10,000mAh at 100W. Our OnePlus Nord 6 review has the detail.

vivo V70 FE, about Rs. 45,000 for 8GB + 128GB: the camera route, with a 200MP main camera with OIS, a 50MP selfie camera, 7,000mAh at 90W and IP68 plus IP69, for about Rs. 5,000 less, with half the storage. It launched at Rs. 37,999, so its price has climbed about Rs. 7,000 since April. See our vivo V70 FE review.

Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G, about Rs. 50,000 for 8GB + 256GB: the same money as the Pro Max for a 6,500mAh cell at 45W and a Dimensity 7400 Ultimate. On paper the Redmi is the clearly better phone at an identical price.

For the wider field, our guide to the best phones between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 50,000 ranks what is worth buying today.

Buy it if
  • Battery life is the first, second and third thing you shop for
  • You want 100W charging and 27W reverse charging in the same phone
  • You are choosing between the 2 Note 17 Pro models: this is the one
  • You game or want the fastest chip at this money: the Nord 6 is a tier above
  • You want a lighter phone: 229g is heavy
  • You need a headphone jack or a memory card slot
The Verdict

Consider, for battery buyers. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max fixes everything that held back the Note 17 Pro: the chip, the memory, the video and the charging. Its 10,000mAh and 100W pairing is one of the strongest battery packages at this price on paper, and it gives up very little to get there. But at about Rs. 50,000 it sits beside a OnePlus Nord 6 that costs about Rs. 3,500 less with the same memory and a much faster chip. Choose the Pro Max if a second day off the charger matters more than performance. Otherwise, the Nord 6 is the better buy.

The biggest battery in the room. Not the best phone in the room.

How we priced and checked this

The price is for the base 8GB + 256GB model, read from live listings at a major Indian retailer and the maker's own India store on 8 October 2026; the launch prices are labelled as such. Rival prices are live listings for each phone's base model, checked the same day. Specifications are confirmed against at least 2 independent sources each, led by the maker's own India specification; where sources disagreed, such as NFC and the main sensor's size, we left the figure out. Our verdicts are based on published specification, not on hands-on testing: we have not held this phone.
