The realme 16x 5G has a handful of things worth wanting: a 7,000mAh battery with 45W charging, IP65 plus a military drop rating, a 144Hz screen and a microSD slot. It also has a 720p LCD and an entry-level Dimensity 6300 chip, and it now sells for Rs. 28,999, Rs. 3,000 above its own launch price. For about Rs. 1,000 less, at least 3 phones offer a sharper screen and a faster chip with the same size of battery. Skip it at this price, unless the price comes back down a long way.

Every phone has a price at which it makes sense. The difficult reviews are the ones where the phone has not changed and the price has moved away from that point.
realme launched the 16x 5G in India on 12 August 2026 at Rs. 25,999 for 4GB + 128GB, Rs. 27,999 for 6GB + 128GB and Rs. 30,999 for 6GB + 256GB. 7 weeks later, every one of those versions sells for exactly Rs. 3,000 more. The 4GB + 128GB model is Rs. 28,999 at 3 major retailers today, and both 6GB versions list at Rs. 30,999 and Rs. 33,999. We found no announced price revision. The listings simply say Rs. 28,999.
That is about 12% above launch. On its own, a rise that size is not unusual this year. The problem is what Rs. 28,999 has to buy, and the answer in this case is an entry-level phone with a very good battery.
The battery half of this phone is genuinely good.
Credit where it is due, because there is real credit here. 7,000mAh charged at 45W is a properly sized battery with charging that keeps up, and realme has added bypass charging, which powers the phone directly from the cable during long gaming or navigation sessions so the battery does not cook while it fills. A 6.5W reverse wired output means it can top up earbuds or a friend's phone in an emergency.
Durability is also better than you might expect from the price tag on the box at launch. IP65 covers dust and water jets, which is monsoon-commute protection rather than swimming protection, and realme also claims MIL-STD-810H testing, including a 1.8m drop. Add a microSD slot that many phones dropped years ago, and the 16x is a sensible tool for someone hard on their phone and short on storage.
The screen refreshes at 144Hz, faster than most phones on sale. Hold that thought, because it comes back in the next section.
Put together, it is better specified than 25% of the 204 phones we track on sale in India.
A 720p screen and an entry-level chip, at a mid-range price.
The display is a 6.81-inch LCD at 720 x 1570, which works out to about 254 pixels per inch. At this size that is low. 144Hz makes it scroll smoothly. It does not add any sharpness, and on a screen this large, small text and fine detail are where you will see the difference on paper. The panel also reaches 1,200 nits only in high-brightness mode, with 975 nits as its typical figure, which is modest next to the AMOLED panels at this money.
The chip is a MediaTek Dimensity 6300. It is a capable everyday chip, and it is also the chip inside a long list of the cheapest 5G phones in India, including realme's own P4 Lite 5G. Of the 28 phones with this chip that we track on sale in India, only one costs more than the 16x does today. Pair it with 4GB of LPDDR4X and UFS 2.2 storage on the base model, and this is entry-level hardware, judged on specification.
The camera is a single 50MP sensor. realme's spec sheet lists one rear camera, so the other rings on the camera island are design, not extra cameras. There is no ultra-wide and no optical stabilisation, the selfie camera is 8MP, and video stops at 1080p. Updates are 2 Android upgrades and 3 years of security patches, which is short by current standards.
Every variant of the realme 16x 5G is Rs. 3,000 above its launch price at major retailers today. Launch-day bank offers took a further Rs. 2,000 off, which is why lower figures still appear in old coverage. We print what the listings charge now.
At least 3 phones under Rs. 28,999 do the screen and the chip better.
This is where the verdict is decided. These phones cost about the same or slightly less on the day of writing, and each matches the 16x on battery:
vivo T5x 5G, about Rs. 28,000 for 6GB + 128GB. A Dimensity 7400 Turbo, a 1080p 120Hz LCD, a 7,200mAh battery at 44W, and IP68 and IP69. More memory, a faster chip, a sharper screen and better water protection, for less money. Our vivo T5x review has the detail.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 5G, about Rs. 28,000 for 6GB + 128GB. A Snapdragon 4 Gen 4, a 6.99-inch 1080p 120Hz AMOLED, and an 8,000mAh battery at 45W. Bigger battery, much better panel.
iQOO Z11x 5G, Rs. 27,999 for 6GB + 128GB at the one major retailer that sells it directly. Dimensity 7400 Turbo, 1080p 120Hz LCD, 7,200mAh at 44W. See our iQOO Z11x review.
And then realme's own P4x 5G, about Rs. 27,000 for 6GB + 128GB: a Dimensity 7400 Ultra, a 1080p 144Hz LCD and 7,000mAh at 45W. It is about Rs. 2,000 cheaper, with the same refresh rate, the same battery, the same charging speed and a 1080p screen. Its IP64 rating is a step below the 16x's IP65, and that is the one point where the 16x is ahead. Our realme P4x review covers it.
So the 16x is not bad. It is outclassed by phones that cost the same or less, and one of them is sold by realme.
- It falls well below Rs. 25,000 in a sale
- You need a microSD slot and a 7,000mAh battery together
- Drop and dust protection matter more than screen sharpness
- You read, browse or watch video a lot: the 720p panel is the weak point
- You want 4 years of use: 4GB and 2 Android upgrades will feel short
- You can spend Rs. 28,000: the phones above give you more
For the wider field at this money, our best battery phones between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 30,000 and best display phones in the same band rank the alternatives.
Skip it at Rs. 28,999. The realme 16x 5G has a strong battery, honest durability and a microSD slot, and at a lower price those would carry it. At Rs. 3,000 above its own launch price, it asks mid-range money for a 720p LCD, a Dimensity 6300 and 4GB of RAM, while the vivo T5x, Redmi Note 17 5G, iQOO Z11x and realme's own P4x offer sharper screens and faster chips for the same money or less. If a sale takes it well below Rs. 25,000, it becomes a reasonable rugged battery phone. Until then, the better buys are next to it. Judged on published specification, not on a hands-on test.
Better specified than 25% of the 204 phones we track on sale in India. 89th percentile on refresh rate, 3rd on sharpness. Smooth, but not sharp, and priced as though it were both.
