The Take

About Rs. 23,000 buys you one of 2 very different promises. The OnePlus N6 promises to last the day, and the next: 8,000mAh at 45W, IP65 and a military drop rating, for about Rs. 22,500 with 4GB + 128GB. The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G promises to last the years: a full-HD AMOLED, OIS, NFC, 6GB of RAM and 6 Android upgrades with 6 years of patches, for Rs. 22,500 to Rs. 24,000 with 6GB + 128GB, on a 5,000mAh battery at 25W. For most buyers, the A17 is the better phone at this money. Pick the N6 only if the battery is the whole brief.

01 - The decision

Battery against everything else.

These 2 phones cost the same today and agree on almost nothing. The N6 puts its money into one thing, the battery, and does it properly: 3,000mAh more than the A17, charged at 45W against 25W. The A17 spreads its money across the screen, the camera, the memory, the software promise and the wallet in your pocket. If you have ever had a phone die at 6pm, the N6's case is easy to feel. If you keep a phone for 4 or 5 years, the A17's is easier to defend.

Our pick for most people is the Galaxy A17 5G. It wins on more of the rows a buyer meets every day, and the one row the N6 wins outright, endurance, still leaves the A17 with a 5,000mAh cell, an ordinary size for the class rather than a small one.

02 - Where the A17 wins

The screen, the camera and the calendar.

The screen is the gap you see first. 1080 x 2340 on a 6.7-inch AMOLED against 720 x 1570 on a 6.8-inch LCD is more than twice the pixels, with the deep blacks of AMOLED. The N6 is smoother at 120Hz against 90Hz, but sharpness is what you notice reading a long message, and the A17 is the sharper phone by a distance.

The camera has stabilisation. The A17's 50MP main camera has OIS, which the N6's does not, and that matters for night shots and walking video. It adds a 5MP ultra-wide, which takes a genuinely different picture, and a 2MP macro that mostly fills a ring. The 13MP front camera is also higher-resolution than the N6's 8MP, for video calls.

The calendar is the biggest gap of all. Samsung promises 6 Android upgrades and 6 years of security updates, to August 2031. For the N6, launch coverage reported 2 upgrades and 3 years, and OnePlus has not put any commitment on its own India pages. On a phone bought to last, that is a 3-year difference in patches.

And the small things. NFC with Samsung Wallet, 6GB of RAM at this price against 4GB, and a body 1.38mm thinner and 32g lighter.

03 - Where the N6 wins

Endurance and toughness, without compromise.

8,000mAh at 45W is a different class of battery. It is 60% more capacity than the A17's 5,000mAh and nearly twice the charging power. OnePlus also adds bypass charging for long sessions on the cable and 5W wired reverse charging.

It is the tougher phone on paper. IP65 against IP54 means better protection from dust and from water jets, and the N6 adds a MIL-STD-810H drop and stress rating on top. For a phone that lives on a scooter or a building site, that is not a footnote.

And a note on the box. The A17 units on sale today, including the listing we priced, ship with a cable but no charger, so budget for one if you do not already own a 25W adapter.

04 - The price story

Samsung raised the A17. The shops did not follow.

The A17 launched at Rs. 18,999 in August 2025, and Samsung has raised its list price several times since; after the September 2026 revision, its own India store lists the 6GB + 128GB at Rs. 27,999 without a charger. Live listings sit between Rs. 22,500 and Rs. 24,000 for the same model, about Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 5,000 under Samsung's own figure. That is unusual in 2026, when most phones are drifting up rather than down, and it is the reason this comparison exists at all: on Samsung's list price, these 2 phones would not share a budget. Nobody can promise how long that gap lasts.

The N6, meanwhile, sits close to where it launched. Its 6GB model launched at Rs. 24,999, and the 4GB model priced here sells at about Rs. 22,500.

05 - Who should buy which

A straight answer for each buyer.

Buy the Galaxy A17 5G if
  • You read, watch and photograph more than you travel
  • You plan to keep the phone for 4 years or more
  • You want NFC payments and OIS at this price
Buy the OnePlus N6 if
  • Battery life is the first, second and third thing on the list
  • Your phone lives outdoors: IP65 and a drop rating
  • You want the faster refill: 45W against 25W

One more phone belongs in this conversation: the POCO M8x 5G matches the N6's battery and charging on paper for about Rs. 3,000 less, so a battery-first buyer should price it before choosing either. The Verdict

The Galaxy A17 5G wins. On published specification it is the better all-round phone at about Rs. 23,000: a sharper AMOLED screen, OIS, NFC, 6GB of RAM, a thinner and lighter body, and an update promise that runs to 2031. The OnePlus N6 wins one argument decisively, endurance, with 8,000mAh at 45W and a tougher IP65 body, and for buyers who live on their battery that one argument is enough. Everyone else should take the Samsung while it sells this far under its own list price.

Same money, opposite bets. The long game beats the long day.

How we priced and checked this

Prices are for each phone's base model, read from live listings at 2 major Indian retailers on 11 October 2026; launch and list prices are labelled as such. The base models differ in memory, 4GB for the N6 against 6GB for the A17, and we compare them at the price they actually sell for. Specifications are confirmed against at least 2 independent sources each, led by each maker's own India specification. Where sources disagreed, such as either phone's peak brightness and the N6's NFC and headphone jack, we left the claim out. Our verdict is based on published specification, not hands-on testing: we have not held either phone.
